License to travel. Earlier on screen than the next Bond movie?
/i Reisen, Travel /av Dr. Tobias LindnerBlog of Dr. Lindner, Chief Medical Officer World Medical Card 5/2021- 6/2021
We grew up with the experience that only if we are intending to travel to special countries or regions in the world we should see a doctor who is an expert in travel medicine beforehand.
In almost all cases this preparation with vaccinations or certain medications was self-centered to protect ourselves from harm but not for reasons focusing on the general health of the population of the country we are travelling to.
As a consequence, we did not need to proof our medical status when crossing the border.
A vaild passport and sometimes a visa with the declaration that we are not suffering from special illnesses was enough.
This not true anymore and proofing a sufficient immune status, a complete vaccination status against Sars- CoV- 2 will become as important as our passport to reach our holiday destination smoothly.
Set under pressure by the countries depending on tourism the European Union (EU) has just decided that every country in the EU can set up its own operating system to ensure a QR-code based documentation of the necessary information for its people.
To avoid discrimination, recent negative testing results must be accepted as well.
Data should only be stored on the mobile of the person itself or on paper.
Using a collective European system then, this certificate should be readable in every EU member state. One can wonder how this will work out until June (2021!) as a lot of EU countries just demonstrated their lack of digital infrastructure and ideas by desperately trying to set up digital solutions for transmitting test results or warnings of dangerous contacts.
But what about non- EU travelers?
Generally, they should be able to join this collective system as well (whenever it is working) and go to Italy or Greece if they have the license to travel!

Although home office is the gold standard to reduce contacts and therefore prevent work- related SARS CoV-2 infections some of us have to be present at work regularly or at least sometimes.
Employers are in charge to cut this necessity down to a minimum of time and have to present effective hygienic concepts for the workplace itself. However, “working” also includes commuting and sometimes even traveling which means exposing employees to a risk of infection out of direct control of the employer. The best way to go to work in terms of infection control is individual transport.
If individual transport is not possible, employers alternatively can organize transport of their staff at least in small groups (“tunnel to work”).
Whenever employees are dependent on public transport they should follow the “rules” of precaution already mentioned in the last blog.
Employers in this case could offer support by providing asks and effective hand rub to minimize risk of infection.
As soon as rapid-antigen-tests for SARS CoV-2 for untrained people are approved by local authorities, regular testing at the workplace might be a meaningful option to avoid work- related infections as well.
To date, international travelling is restricted to a high extent and replaced by digital solutions.
In the event of an inevitable job- related journey employer and employee should both check the actual regulations of all affected countries/areas (entry, quarantine, accommodation) and anticipate possible changes during the time of the trip.
A special focus should be on the testing options at the destination to assure an uncomplicated way back home as well as the knowledge of a medical contact for eventual treatment and the availability of all necessary medical information of the persons travelling.

Are you allergic to wasp?
/i Allergien, Allergien, Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden, Reisen /av EditorialteamPer is hypersensitive to wasp but loves to be outdoors.
As always, he cruises on his Harley, of course with an open helmet, and does not think that he can really be in a high danger situation. Not because of the motorcycle ride, but because of the angry wasp that has just landed on his cheek.
The wasp does not like speed, and stings Per on the cheek.
Per notices the sting and pulls over to the side. He quickly becomes ill. The situation is worsening and Per loses consciousness. His biker buddies do not understand what has happened.
This can end badly.
BUT:
Per has WORLD MEDICAL CARD as an app on his phone, and he has been so foresighted that he has shared this with a couple of his biker friends.
One friend looks at the app, sees the sting and quickly realizes what has happened.
In addition to having access to the information about Per’s allergies, Per has also noted in the app that the adrenaline pen is in the bag in front of the motorcycle – just in case.
It is also stated in the app which doctor the comrades should call if such a situation should arise. And they also find the contact details for Per’s partner.
Be Smart like Per and be prepared for the unexpected.

Welt-Malaria-Tag am 25. April
Was genau sind eigentlich blutverdünnende Arzneimittel?
/i Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden, Patientensicherheit, Reisen /av Jo Inge Myhre, MD
Was bewirken diese Medikamente?
